Last year, Blackman and two other Richardson teachers went to south Africa and spent their entire summer vacations working with the young victims of that country's AIDS epidemic."It's just getting out there and doing something, your little bit, cause it's a huge problem, millions are affected by it, so we just chose one little village, one school and just focus on that to make that difference with the one," Blackman said. "They feed them, house them, clothe them everything you expect from a normal family except their parents have either died from aids, or they themselves have been orphaned because they have HIV-AIDS."The teachers documented their trip with photos and video and said it was a life changing experience for them and the kids they encountered. This year, four of the teachers plan to make the trip. They said it helps them grow as educators."Here we have class sizes between 20 and 30 ... in South Africa ...50 to 60 ... they have very little and (are) eager to learn, they understand that education is their way out of poverty and they're eagerness to learn in a classroom setting, (it's) just magnificent to witness that."More information:Official site for Teachers Making A Difference
