ReStore is a retail store where consumers can find great bargains while helping save the earth. Volunteers will serve as clerks, cashiers, stockers, greeters and other duties as necessary. The Geriatric Wellness Center of Collin County, which promotes health and wellness of older adults, is seeking participants for its Project Independence program. Volunteers will assist disabled seniors post-hospitalization by aiding with transportation, providing one-on-one companionship, shopping/errand assistance and other duties as needed. ULTIMATE HOME MAKEOVER

The Heritage Farmstead Museum, which collects preserves ad interprets late 19th and 20th century Blackland Prairie history while making appropriate use of the authentically restored Farrell-Wilson Farmstead, is seeking home improvement volunteers. Volunteers will help with multiple projects at the 116 year-old, 4-acre farmstead. Training is provided and the minimum age to volunteer is 16.

WELLNESS IN TEXAS

Texas Cooperative Extension (TCE), which strives to provide outreach, continuing education and services to the people of Texas, is seeking volunteers for their Wellness in Texas program. Volunteers will be provided with 40 hours of training in health and nutrition education and in return, the volunteers agree to give back 40 hours of service through TCE in Collin and Denton Counties. Service opportunities include giving presentations, assisting with cooking schools, passing out information and a variety of other service opportunities. Minimum age to volunteer is 16.

MARDI GRAS MASQUERADE
Time: January 26, 7:30 a.m. – Midnight
American Red Cross – Dallas Area Chapter needs volunteers for its Mardi Gras Masquerade, a party with live entertainment, a Cajun style buffet, drinks, a casino, auction and raffle. Mardi Gras Masquerade 2008 benefits go to fund the various services provided by the organization. Volunteers are needed to help with checking people in, setting up the different entertainment and dining areas, and with cleaning up after the event is complete. Wear cocktail attire. Minimum age to volunteer is 21.

PROMOTE KIDNEY HEALTH

National Kidney Foundation of North Texas, which seeks to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by these diseases and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation, needs volunteers for its’ NBC5 HealthFit KEEP Event. Dallas CASA, which advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children in protective care to help them find safe, permanent homes where they can thrive, needs volunteers. Special Care and Career Services, which provides services to children and adults with developmental disabilities so they can lead fulfilling lives in their communities, needs volunteers to participate in its’ Adopt-a-Client program. Volunteers adopt a client and take an active role in helping them obtain competitive employment. Volunteers provide job leads to employment consultants, help set up interviews, and generally utilize their contacts in the community to help secure a job for the client. MENTORS

Human Rights Initiative provides free legal representation and social services to victims of human rights abuses. They need mentors to help clients learn about American culture and living in North Texas. Volunteers will show clients how to ride a DART bus, go grocery shopping, run errands, and attend cultural events. A confidentiality agreement and criminal background check are required. Minimum age to volunteer is 18. Mandatory mentor training is held on Thursday, October 11 at 5:30 p.m. at HRI’s office at Oak Lawn and Maple.
