DALLAS -- A North Texas mother says swimming lessons turned out to be life-saving for her infant daughter."There goes Kaley trying to get the flower, she went in fully clothed," Suzanne England said. "She fell into the Jacuzzi, she was about 9 months old."England said luckily she had been taking Kaley to swimming lessons since she was 5 months old, or the worst could have happened.
"She reoriented herself and swam to the side of the wall," England said.England said without the lessons Kaley "would have drowned, then she would have sunk right to the bottom."Jean Russell, aquatic director at Emler Swim School, said it is never too early for children to take swim lessons."They instinctively hold their breath, kick their feet -- that's what babies do right from birth," Russell said.In class Russell said the children learn to sit and stand in the water, jump in, then turn and swim to the side. She said she loves knowing she's helped save lives."In Texas, the leading cause of accidental death for 2-year-olds is drowning," Russel said. "Every year I have any number of parents say they blinked and their child jumped in the water and they did what they do in class."
