After the start of the new year, many people entertain thoughts of improving their lives by losing weight or stopping smoking. A large percentage of those people lack the will power and positive reinforcement to accomplish their goals.

Hypnotherapy might provide the missing link. In fact, the American Medical Association has approved the therapy, and it's becoming a popular tool used by doctors to help change behavior in their patients.

Ed Allen believes in the power of hypnosis.

"I'm in good shape," he said. "I'm in good health, but there's a difference between being a winner and being a champion. It's that gap that I'm working on."

Allen uses hypnosis as part of wellness program devised by his doctor. Allen attends three hypnotism sessions with an in-house hypnotherapist at his doctor's office in Bedford.

Hypnotism taps into a person's subconscious mind where memories and habits are formed. A hypnotist voices suggestions for personal improvement while a patient is in a state of deep relaxation, although still mentally aware of events and surroundings.

Medical studies have showed hypnosis can help people stop smoking, reduce stress and improve their immune systems.

"I see hypnosis allowing people to take control again," hypnotist John Dawson said. "To take control of those areas of their lives that they feel are out of control."

Patients are given a compact disc that helps them use self-hypnosis between professional sessions. Success depends on the individual, Dawson said.

"It can only help a person the way they want to be helped," he said.

Hypnotists said patients typically should realize results after three session. The cost can exceed $100 per visit.
