Boras Holding Nearly All The Cards

Anaheim, CA -- Scott Boras has the world at his control....well at least the baseball world, it seems. As baseball's super agent, Boras has several big-name players up for contracts this year and it will produce a windfall for his clients. Carlos Beltran, Adrian Beltre, Jason Varitek, Magglio Ordonez, J.D. Drew, Kevin Millwood and Derek Lowe are all on his power-packed roster. When the dust clears and each of these players get new contracts, the total value could approach half a billion dollars. It's nearly certain all of the deals won't be consummated at this weekend's Winter Meetings at the Anaheim Marriott, but the opportunities are endless. "We've got three rooms, a suite, 10 people sitting in a room at computers," Boras said. "We know everything that goes on at every minute, proposals that come in. We've been through this many, many times." "It's very customary for us to handle anywhere from 10 to 15 free agent annually. The real thing is narrowing the teams" Boras started that process at the general managers meetings last month in south Florida. "Once you finally get to the winter meetings, the process is very defined," Boras said. "You look at each player. You have set meetings at set times and you both agree to call." A huge advantage for an agent of Boras' status is that at the Winter Meetings he, or any agent for that matter, can meet with several teams without leaving the hotel. And at the Marriott there's plenty of opportunity for that, even though the sunny, warm weather in Anaheim tempts one to hit the golf links. "The great thing about these meetings is we can actually meet up to 10 teams in a day. We were up last night (Thursday) until 2:30 in the morning and you get things done," Boras said. "You don't have to fly anywhere, go anywhere. There's no phone calls missing and everybody is intent on doing something. It's quite a process and a very efficient one, frankly." In that case, there's no rest for the weary, or the rich for that matter. "You don't need much sleep, You're kind of wound up," Boras said. "You have a lot of things going on. It's really a lot of fun." Carrying an overstuffed soft brief case with his cell phone clipped to it, Boras obviously has plenty of paperwork to digest each night. With each of his players finalizing new contracts, the load becomes lighter each day. However, Boras has a lot of work to do. He's a busy man. Very busy.
