Great-Grandma Upset After Toddlers Given Pot

POSTED: 10:46 am CST March 4, 2007

The great-grandmother of the two young boys who police say were coerced into smoking marijuana by their uncle calls the entire episode outrageous, NBC 5 reported.

The videotape confiscated by Watauga Police shows the boys, ages 2 and 5, actually being provided with marijuana by their uncle Demetrius McCoy, 17, and the uncle's friend, Vanswan Polty, 18, police said. The video shows the pair encouraging the children to "get high," police said. A man can be seen placing a marijuana cigarette into a baby's mouth and, in another part of the video, a different boy is shown smoking on his own, police said.

Shirley Russell, McCoy's grandmother, said she was working at the time the incident occurred.

"I'm very upset about it. I didn't raise them like that and they know I didn't raise them like that," Shirley Russell said. "I feel terrible about it, it's outrageous, all the things that went on and I didn't know nothing about them."

Russell agrees her grandson needs to be punished, but said her primary concern getting the two children out of foster care.

"I'm really concerned, I know that was wrong for them to do that," Russell said. "I work hard every day and I try to give them whatever they need, so I just hope they come back here."

The children have been in the custody of Child Protective Services since last week, a spokeswoman said.

Both teenagers are now charged with injury to a child.

Police found the video Feb. 22 while investigating McCoy and Polty in connection with some area burglaries. The bail for Demetris McCoy, 17, was set at $150,000. He remained in jail Friday night, police said. Polty was being held at the Watauga Jail. Bail was set at $150,000 following his arrest late Friday.
