DALLAS -- A North Texas family said they were in shock on Friday after the death of a teenager who may have died from the flu.The teenage boy, Taylor Moon, attended Westlake Academy, where friends honored Moon.NBC 5 News reported that paramedics had already summoned an air ambulance to bring the 15-year-old to Cook Children's Hospital for emergency treatment. Moon, however, never made it after efforts to revive him at Baylor Grapevine proved unsuccessful.
Family and friends said like any 15-year-old, Moon was full of dreams for the future."It's rough," said Nathan Jones, Moon's brother. "It's tough losing a 15-year-old kid. "He had a huge impact on this school, and it was obvious by the memorial these kids put on today it was amazing."Moon had been home suffering from flu-like symptoms for several days and suddenly took a turn for the worse early Thursday morning."He was not responding," said Moon's aunt, Deby Prime. "They called the paramedics and the emergency room and they were unable to re-start him and get him back. They worked on him for at least two hours and never got a response out of him and his family had to let him go."Moon's family was awaiting work from the medical examiner on whether it was in fact the flu that caused his death."There may have been something underlying with Taylor that we didn't know about," said Dr. Sean Black of Dallas Presbyterian Hospital. While the flu can be fatal, doctors said these days, deaths from the virus are rare."Most people will have the flu, miss a few days of work, and will recover," Black said.Black said this flu season seems to be hitting later than normal.Moon's family asked that any donations be made to the Westlake Academy Memorial Fund.
