FORT WORTH, Texas -- Thick black smoke and flames could be seen for miles as thousands of gallons of fuel burned out of control in Fort Worth Wednesday.
Edward Gibson said that he heard something and rushed from his apartment to see the tanker truck torn in two.
"I heard some breaks squeal. I heard a crash," Gibson said.
The broken vehicle was butted against a telephone pole, according to Gibson, who also said that the tank had disconnected, tipped on its side and caught fire.
Moments later, the tank erupted into a ball of flames, a massive fire burning dangerously close to the nearby Wood Hollow apartments.
Also close by was the busy 1st Class Academy day care, just next door.
"My first thought, it's going to explode and take the whole building with it," evacuated resident Bridget Holten said. "So, we just wanted to get everybody out of there and get the kids back, especially."
Investigators said that the driver of the fuel truck likely crashed because he lost control after driving over a large dip in the road.
No one was injured in the crash or resulting fire.
