Police said a 7-year-old cancer patient's toys, medicines and medical records were stolen while he ate breakfast at a Dallas restaurant on Tuesday.

Kyle Spriggs was scheduled for an early-morning chemotherapy appointment. His backpack was stolen while he and his parents ate breakfast at a Denny's on Tuesday morning, the day before his birthday.

"It had my homework and my medicine in it, and I couldn't leave my medicine. I needed to take it," he said.

The thieves also stole all of his medical records and his Playstation Portable game system, police said.

"They should be ashamed of themselves; they really should," his mother, Trish Spriggs, said.

Spriggs and his family travel from Oklahoma to Dallas once a month to treat the golf-ball-sized tumor in his brain.

"It hurts me, because some of the medicines burn my nose," he said.

He and his parents always eat at the Denny's on Motor Street beforehand.

The Spriggs family have experienced a tough times recently. Their home was destroyed by floodwaters in July, and Spriggs' tumor was discovered in September.

"I am just wondering when this dark cloud is going to pass along," Trish Spriggs said. "We have been through a lot in the several few months."

But for a few minutes on Tuesday afternoon, the family said it felt as if that dark cloud had passed.

The Dallas police officers who responded to the break-in surprised Kyle Spriggs with a new PSP, video games and money to replace his medications.

A card from the officers read: "Have yourself a golden day! From your friends at the Dallas Police Department."

"Those officers went above and beyond their job, and they just made his day," Trish Spriggs said.

Kyle Spriggs' reaction?

"Wow," he said.

The Dallas Police Department said it raised about $1,200 for the Spriggs family in just two and a half hours, all in donations from police officers.
