Tracy Roberson, 37, cried several times while on the stand Monday afternoon. She described in great detail how she was involved in a controlling relationship with her husband of 21 years, Darrell Roberson.

Prosecutors said Tracy Roberson falsely told her husband she was raped to cover up an extramarital affair, resulting in the shooting death of her lover, Devin LaSalle, 32.

The jury decided last week that her reckless behavior caused her husband to shoot and kill LaSalle when Tracy Roberson falsely told her husband LaSalle raped her in December 2006.

In her testimony, Tracy Roberson tried to convince the Tarrant County jury to give her probation rather than a prison sentence. She faced up to 20 years in prison.

"Five years seems slight, but this is a unique case; it's a groundbreaking case," prosecutor Sean Colston said.

Tracy Roberson's defense attorneys consoled her three children, who cried hysterically after the sentence was announced.

"What do you say when children are going from Mom to Dad and saying, 'How can this happen? Daddy, you told me Mom was coming home,'" defense attorney Jill Davis said.

Davis said all the children saw was "their mother in jail clothes being led off in handcuffs."

Davis said she thinks Tracy Roberson will be a model prisoner and will make parole after two and a half years.

Defense attorneys had previously said that putting Tracy Roberson on the stand might help the jury see the human side.

Defense attorneys had argued that Darrell Roberson never believed she was being raped when he caught her in a compromising situation with LaSalle.

"The evidence -- and you'll know it after you hear it -- is that he pulled that trigger because he was mad, and he was jealous, and he couldn't have heard her cry rape," Davis said.

Tracy Roberson was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter last week after jurors deliberated for nearly two days. Deliberations began Thursday afternoon, and the jury reached a verdict at about 5:30 p.m. Friday. The punishment phase of the trial began Monday morning.

Tracy Roberson burst into tears when the guilty verdict was announced before she was taken into custody on Friday, NBC 5 reported.
