DAISETTA, Texas -- A huge sinkhole in southeast Texas continues to grow.
The hole opened Wednesday in the town of Daisetta, which is northeast of Houston. It swallowed tanks, trees, a parked tractor and oil field equipment. The hole is now about the length of two football fields and is about 100 feet deep.Utility workers have cut power lines, oil companies have emptied storage tanks and officials are working to keep the hole from growing. No one has been hurt and no homes have toppled into the chasm.Officials speculated that the ground may have caved in because an old salt dome may have collapsed.Oil workers store salt water that they use in pumping out oil in salt domes. The town of Daisetta sits on a salt dome.
