Hundreds of bicyclists gathered at Joe Pool Lake on Tuesday to remember Meredith Hatch and Mike Alfaro. They were training for a bike race when they were hit and killed by a car driven by a man police said had been drinking.
"I just want to say to everyone out here doing this, thank you from the bottom of our hearts, thank you," Alfaro's wife, Alisa, said."If there is a road to heaven, I am going to ride up and meet them there, straight up," said Jeff Delavega, Alfaro's training partner. "See you there when I get there."Malea Jaffe, Hatch's training partner, said she misses her friend."I miss her sparkling smile. I miss her eyes. She was so gracious," she said.Police said Kenneth Bain was drunk when his Lincoln Navigator struck the cyclists from behind. He was released from jail on a $50,000 bond. But Alfaro's mother, Joyce Cates, said she did not think Bain's bail should have been reduced."At this moment, to the judge that reduced the bail bonds, he's never had a child killed by a drunk driver. I hope he never does. But if he does, he'll never do it again," she said.Bain's brother Brian said his sibling is "devastated.""We're just so sorry," he said. "I don't what you can say. You can't make anything right with that. We are just so sorry."Police said Kenneth Bain failed a field sobriety test and admitted he'd been at a bachelorette party a couple of hours before the crash. He was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter.
