James Murdoch Defends Handling of Hack Scandal

James Murdoch defended his record at the helm of his father's newspaper empire Tuesday in testimony before a judicial inquiry into the phone hacking scandal that has scarred the company. The former News International chairman said he had no reason to doubt his subordinates but was misled by them about the scope of illegal hacking at the now-defunct News of the World tabloid. "I was given assurances by them which proved to be wrong," he said, adding that he thought it was a "thing of the past" when he took over in 2007. His father, Rupert Murdoch, is set to appear before Lord Justice Brian Leveson's inquiry into media ethics tomorrow.
