THE COLONY, Texas -- A crisis has arisen involving a north Texas mayor and her criminal past.
Some people living in The Colony want to get rid of the mayor because of her criminal record.
Mayor Bernetta Henville-Shannon's criminal record dates back 23 years.
Though she denied it at first, court records show in 1979 she pleaded guilty to auto theft and faced drug and larceny charges when she was 20 years old.
There is some confusion as to whether or not the mayor's records were cleared, ridding her of her criminal past.
"She is trying to determine if [she is a convicted felon]. Her understanding at the time ... is that she was not. She was told that she received deferred adjudication which would have wiped it off of her record," mayor's spokesperson Giles Hudson said.
For now, she is still the mayor at least until the mayor pro tem decides otherwise.
The City Council will elect a new mayor pro tem Friday night during a meeting at City Hall.
