DALLAS -- A man posing as a FedEx employee has robbed a number of Dallas businesses during the past few days. The robber, pretending to be a deliveryman, carries a FedEx box into a business and demands cash from employees.
The Box Bandit, as investigators call him, robbed a Bank One branch at the intersection of Mockingbird Lane and Abrams Road on Wednesday. He approached a teller and handed her a box, which contained a holdup note.
Investigators said that concealing holdup notes in the boxes, the robber can appear to patrons to be conducting legitimate business.Monday, the bandit targeted a Compass Bank location at St. Francis Avenue and Interstate 30. Investigators said the Box Bandit's crime spree started Sunday. He also has struck another bank and a pizza parlor.Sunday, the bandit hit a CiCi's Pizza located on Samuel Boulevard, near the Compass Bank location, according to police. The restaurant was busy with customers, and the cashier he approached was caught off guard by reading the note's message, which had instructions to fill the box with large-denomination bills."She started backing up, and he goes, 'Don't be nervous, just relax, be calm and put the money in the FedEx (box),' " Terry Ivie, CiCi's general manager, said. "Basically, we had some guests that were walking in, and he just turned around and ran out the store."A CiCi's manager tried to get a license plate number or other vehicle description, but the bandit already had departed the parking lot.Investigators said the Box Bandit has not indicated that he was carrying a weapon, but he still is considered to be dangerous.
