FORT WORTH, Texas -- A man apparently killed himself Monday after a nine-hour standoff with police following a shooting rampage at a rural church that left four people dead and another person wounded.Previous reports from the sheriff's department were that the man had surrendered and was in custody.
The suspected gunman, A.P. Crenshaw, walked into a North Texas church and opened fire, police said. Two people were killed, including church member Ernest Wesley Brown, 61, and pastor James Armstrong, 42. A third person inside the church was also shot.Crenshaw, who is believed to be in his 50s, then allegedly shot and killed Holly Love Brown, 50, and her unnamed passenger before taking the woman's car, officials said."These two ladies, from what it appeared, happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time," Fannin County Sheriff Kenneth Moore said.Crenshaw fled and was later tracked to his home near the church in Sash, about 80 miles north of Dallas near the Oklahoma border.Sheriff's deputies and a SWAT team surrounded the house, and after the long standoff police said the man surrendered just before 6 a.m. However, when officers entered the home they found him dead, Moore said."We have good reason to believe, based at what we see at the scene, that it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound," Moore said. "It was a very tragic night for the community of Sash and for law enforcement."Moore said the motive for the shootings was under investigation.Crenshaw held authorities at bay all night at his home in the rural Sash community, said Chris Moore, a dispatcher for the Fannin County Sheriff's Department. The shooting happened about 9 p.m. Sunday as evening services were under way. Published reports said witnesses told investigators that evening services were under way when a knock was heard at the door. When someone opened the door, a man began firing, wounding three people, two fatally.
