DALLAS -- North Texas probation officers are trying to track down federal fugitives lost in the chaos of two major hurricanes.Officials told NBC 5 that criminals living with family members are the hardest to track down and urge all on probation to notify authorities of their location. Several phone numbers have been made available for probationers who are trying to notify authorities of their location.Since Hurricane Katrina, more than 100 evacuees staying in north and east Texas who are convicted of federal crimes have voluntarily reported their location.
Local probation officers are compiling a database to make sure the offenders don't get lost in Texas."It's been a little overwhelming, but we're managing it. The officers are willing to give 100 percent because we know New Orleans would do the same for us," said Myra Kirkwood, Supervising U.S. Probation Officer. The federal probation system in hurricane ravaged Louisisana is calling on officers here in North Texas to help track down evacuees who are supposed to be under supervision."It could be from bank embezzlement ... your white-collar offenses ... it could be your drug trafficking, bank robberies, child pornography on the internet," said Kirkwood.Evacuees on probation for misdemeanors and felonies are being urged to report who they are staying with as well as disclosing an address and phone number. If the probationers do not supply this information, arrest warrants will be issued, officials said."We do have a list of all the offenders out of the eastern district, out of Louisiana. We do know which offenses they have committed, so if it is an aggravated or sex related offense, we are going to make contact with those individuals in person," said Kirkwood. The eastern district of the Texas probation office in Plano has two officers from New Orleans here trying to locate evacuees who need to report. On The Web: Evacuees who need to report can find more information here.
