DALLAS -- A new ordinance in the city of Dallas says drivers caught without insurance could have their car towed, but only if they are involved in an accident. The city's towing policy calls for all uninsured vehicles involved in accidents to be impounded. The car would remain impounded until the owner could prove insurance covers the vehicle. The ordinance took effect Saturday, and by Monday afternoon, NBC 5 reported that 25 cars had been towed to the city's impound lot.
Police have some discretion in terms of deciding if a driver's car should be towed after an accident. For example, officers don't want to leave a family stranded at night after a minor accident, according to an NBC 5 report. Many people NBC 5 spoke to about the issues supported the new ordinance."Honestly, I think everyone should have insurance. If not for the safety of others, but yourself," said driver John Vasquez.Dallas City Councilman James Fantroy disapproves of the new policy and said it targets the poor, who cannot afford insurance. The policy is not as strict as other cities in North Texas, where uninsured vehicles can be towed away when the driver is pulled over.Dallas police said following a stricter policy would overwhelm officers and the impound lot.Drivers can retrieve their cars by showing proof of insurance.
