Water-Logged Brazos Belle Riverboat Being Scrapped

New owners decide cost too high to restore riverboat

A once-popular riverboat in Waco is being sold for scrap.

The new owners of the water-logged Brazos Belle have decided the cost would be too high to restore the riverboat, which formerly featured a restaurant.

Some Waco businessmen, including Jim Hawkins, recently acquired the 160-foot vessel for $10,000.

An engineer advised the group that renovations were not feasible, Hawkins said.

The Brazos Belle, once a fixture along the Brazos River, will be sold in pieces, The Waco Tribune-Herald reported in its online editions Wednesday.

The Brazos Belle was damaged in 2007 spring flooding. The bow of the riverboat dipped below the surface of Lake Brazos last November.
