----------- 1935 - Seven year old Azucar, a former steeplechaser, won the inaugural Santa Anita Handicap at Santa Anita Park. 1960 - Demolition began at Ebbets Field. It was the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1913 to 1957. It was replaced by an apartment complex. 1983 - Herschel Walker signed with the New Jersey Generals of the USFL. He signed a 3-year, $5 million contract. 1985 - Indiana Hoosiers basketball coach Bobby Knight was ejected five minutes into the Indiana 72-63 loss to Purdue when he threw a chair across the court. 1991 - The North Carolina Tar Heels became the first college basketball school in history to win 1,500 games with a 73-57 win over the Clemson Tigers. 1993 - The Sacramento Gold Miners were admitted as the CFL's ninth franchise. They were the first ever United States team. 1999 - Sunil Gulati, the Deputy Commissioner of Major League Soccer, was removed from his duties by the league after rumors of abuse of power in overseeing players contracts surfaced. 2000 - The National Hockey League suspended Boston Bruins defenseman Marty McSorley for at least the balance of the 1999-2000 season, including the playoffs, for his attack on Vancouver's Donald Brashear. McSorley's suspension - 23 games -- was the number of games left in Boston's regular season. This was the longest suspension for an on-ice incident in league history. 2002 - Germany captured the four-man bobsled competition at the Olympics, while the United States men broke a 46-year medal drought in the sport by earning the silver and bronze. - Canadian Marc Gagnon captured a pair of gold medals, winning the 500-meter short track race and then helping his country to victory in the 5,000-meter relay. - France's Jean-Pierre Vidal captured the gold medal in the men's slalom competition. - Yes Its True, driven by John Campbell, won the Cape & Cutter Pace Final in a stakes-record 1:51.2 at The Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey. 2003 - The Temple Owls became the sixth college basketball school to win 1,600 career games. Temple defeated Fordham, 99-77. - New Jersey Devils forward Joe Nieuwendyk notched the 1,000th point of his career with a goal in the Devils 4-3 victory over Pittsburgh. 2005 - The Dallas Cowboys signed veteran quarterback Drew Bledsoe.
