FORT WORTH, Texas -- Those who commute along on Interstate 30 in Fort Worth will soon face some gridlock.
Texas Department of Transportation workers are preparing to tear down the Oakland Boulevard bridge Saturday night to build a new and improved bridge. The project is expected to last three months, which means motorists can expect to use alternate routes.
The served as part of the turnpike that ran between Oakland Boulevard and Dallas from the late 1950s to the 1970s.
"We've got new bridges that will last a very long time. It will just improve the traffic flow in this area," TXDOT spokesman Michael Peters said.
The Beach Street bridge, the next exit west of the Oakland Boulevard bridge, came down in January to accommodate widening of Interstate 30.
The demolition of the Sylvan Avenue bridge is also under way. Six projects are now going on along I-30 in Dallas and Tarrant counties.
A huge section of I-30 from the Tarrant County line to Northwest 7th Street will widen from six to 10 lanes.
